Amateur photographers tend to hold the camera at
eye level. However, this will produce predictable
results. Shooting from a natural angle produces
mundane images most of the time. When shooting in
a particular place, learn to ‘work the area’. Drop to
your knees, or even lie on the ground, searching for
fresh angles. An aerial perspective can be stunning.
Always keep in mind that the best way of composition
is your feet. Try various other perspectives apart from
eye level and look for frames from different angles
which will help you get some creative images in your
portfolio.

Look for a simple background
behind your subject. For
example, avoid having a
telephone pole or a distracting
element in the background that
may look like it is protruding
from a person’s head. If you
have a telephoto lens, you can
apply a narrow depth-of-field
to blur the background. This
will separate your subject from
the background, achieving a
degree of separation. You can
also change the angle slightly
or make changes to your
composition to do the same. It
will also help to avoid distraction
from the background and keep
the viewers’ attention solely on
the subject.
