jEssEs on BIrD lEGs

Jesses are straps made of leather that
bird handlers use to keep control of the
birds. These can make your shots look
messy, so it’s a good idea to remove
them from your pictures in Photoshop
or Elements. Grab the Clone Stamp tool
and hold the Alt key to
get a ‘good’ set of
pixels, like, then release
the Alt key and paint
over the jesses to
replace them.

sachtler Flowtech 75 tripod

GuY’s tripod of choice is a
Sachtler Flowtech 75 tripod, billed
as the world’s fastest legs, due to
a clever magnet system that
allows each leg to be released
and locked with a lever. Its carbon fibre
construction means it’s light, tipping the scales
at just 3.5kg, but impressively can support
camera and lens loads of up to 20kg.

cAmerA settings

To capTure pin-sharp shots of birds in flight
you’ll want to choose a shutter speed of 1/
sec or faster to eliminate subject blur. Go into
Manual mode and dial in a shutter speed of
1/2000 sec, an aperture of f/5.6 and an ISO of

  1. You could use Auto-ISO, though this can be
unreliable if the brightness of the background
changing often as you pan. Take a test shot and
fine-tune the ISO until the exposure is spot-on.
