ondon Southend Airport is 45 miles
(72km) from the capital’s centre and
has recently undergone a major
£140m transformation following
acquisition by the Stobart Group. The work
included a new terminal building and air traffic
control tower, runway extension, and railway
station with services to London as well as
building the hotel featured.
The Holiday Inn Southend, opened in
October 2012, has 129 rooms and is just a few
minutes’ walk from the terminal building and

train station. Photography is
best from the rooftop restaurant
and bar although rooms on
the third and fourth  oor facing the new
terminal provide a good position as well.
There are some lighting poles to contend
with but aircraft on the terminal apron can be
photographed between them.
For the airliners that frequent Southend
apron and taxiing shots can be taken using a
focal length of 200 to 300mm while 400mm is
needed when they are on the runway. The old
