Munich Launches Satellite Terminal
Munich Airport’s new midfield satellite terminal

  • the first of its kind in Germany – became
    operational on April 26.
    The €900m facility, designed by
architectural firm Koch + Partner, is an
extension to the existing Terminal 2, which
is used by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance

partners. The satellite adds a further 27 gates
and increases the capacity of Terminal 2 by 11
million passengers per annum to 36mppa.
It features 15 retail areas, seven restaurants
and three duty free zones along with 43,055sq
ft (4,000m^2 ) of lounges split across five
different facilities.

London City Airport Sold
Alberta Investment Management Corporation
(AIMCo) has purchased London City Airport for
an undisclosed fee, thought to be around £2bn.
The Canadian investment fund management
firm acquired the airport on behalf of its clients
OMERS, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan,
Borealis, and Wren House Infrastructure
Management (the infrastructure investing arm
of the Kuwait Investment Authority).
The sale, which closed on March 10, has
raised concerns among users of the airport.

Willie Walsh, CEO of International Airlines
Group (IAG), has warned that British Airways,
the most frequent user of the facilities, might
move flights elsewhere should charges
dramatically increase.
Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP)
owned a 75% stake in London City for the
last decade. The firm bought its share for
£750m in 2006, since when passenger
numbers have increased from 2.4m to 4.3m
(in 2015). A spokesman for the new owners

said they are dedicated to developing existing
and new airline relationships and routes, and
improving the airport’s customer service:
“Working together with management and
local authorities, the consortium will support
the enhancement of facilities and build on the
airport’s successful track record.”
Individual members of the consortium
also have investments in Belfast International
Airport, Birmingham Airport, Bristol Airport,
Brussels Airport and Copenhagen Airport.
