Laneqash can benefit from
a drop in class at Haydock

Laneqash has a good record when fresh
and he can make a winning reappear-
ance in the Betfred John of Gaunt
Stakes (3.30) at Haydock Park today.
A winner at Ascot on his debut as a
juvenile, Laneqash put up his best effort
on his first start last year when second
to the classy Sacred in the group two
Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.
Roger Varian’s charge has been geld-
ed since last season and is fancied to
make the most of a drop in class here.
He rates fair value at the 7-1 generally
on offer.
Robert Cowell is a dab hand with
sprinters and the Newmarket trainer
can take the Betfred Nifty Fifty Achilles
Stakes (1.45) with Clarendon House.
This colt won four times last year and
was beaten just a head on his return to
action at Goodwood, travelling well but
just seeming to need the run.
He was far from disgraced when
fourth in group three company at
Longchanp last time, never able to land
a blow after a slow start, and there
should be more to come from him.
Mahrajaan and Contact look the two
to concentrate on in the Betfred Dou-
ble Delight Handicap (2.20), with pref-
erence for the former. He quickly devel-
oped into a useful handicapper last
season, winning three times in succes-
sion before finishing third in a competi-
tive handicap at York in October.
He shaped better than the result sug-
gests there, as he was held up in a slowly
run race and unable to get to grips with
a pair that were ridden more promi-
nently. Mahrajaan is beautifully bred
and looks the type to continue toprogress this year. He can make a
winning return.
The Betfred Pinnacle Stakes (2.55)
can go to Ireland, with the Jessica
Harrington-trained Climate fancied to
lift the prize. She was badly hampered
when a staying-on fifth in a big field in
this grade at Newmarket last October
and again looked ready for a step up in
trip when a one-paced fourth at the
same track on her return to action this
month.
She has a mixed pedigree but in
terms of stamina she appears to take
after her sire, Derby winner Australia,
and this first try at a mile and a half
could well bring some improvement.
At Beverley, JM Jungle can take the
Bet365 Two Year Old Trophy (3.15). He
overcame some trouble in running to
win at Hamilton last time, picking up in
good style in the closing stages. He can
