Scale Aviation Modeller International — November 2017

(ff) #1
Inter-rib spaces were
shaded with lightened
XF-57. The rib lines
themselves were
highlighted with XF-57,
darkened with 25% XF-52
Flat Earth.

There are some knockout marks on the
fuselage sides, but in reality they are barely
visible with the interior in place.

The engine rewards careful
painting, as well the addition
of spark plug leads, made
from lead wire.

Draping the very stiff belts over the seat left
them looking a bit awkward.

The engine bay is rigged
with elastic thread, but
not much will be visible.

The partially completed
interior; bracing wires were
added to the main bays.

The undersides of the wings were painted
with Tamiya XF-57 Buff and the rib tapes
masked with 1mm tape.

A range of Citadel and Vallejo
paints were used for the engine.

The instrument panel is
enhanced by some rather
nice decals.

With the forward
and rear decks in
place, the interior
is just visible.

Ammunition drum racks are
made up from folded and
separate photo-etch parts

emphasis using XF-51. The PC10
surfaces could now be given a
light protective coat of Citadel
aerosol Purity Seal and the fuselage
masked to allow the “Battleship
Grey” (H331) to be repainted.
Along the way, I fitted the
horizontal stabiliser and fin/rudder,
together with the bracing struts.
With the main fuselage complete,
the complex undercarriage can be
fitted and rigged and the radiators
added. On reflection, I think the
XF-57 and home-brewed PC10
I used are probably too dark,
although I’m certainly no expert!
In the spirit of doing as much
as I could before embarking on
the rigging, I decided to add the
decals to the wings and fuselage
at this point, preparing the
surface with some thin coats of
Tamiya X-22. The decals behave
themselves and, whilst rather
thick, they are very opaque and
settle over the detail with a couple
of applications of MicroSol.
