Mustang ‘Miss Velma’ of the Anglia Aircraft Restoration had

to make a forced landing in a field near Duxford, close to

Junction 10 of the M11 Motorway, but why it had to do that

is unknown. It never saw service in World War Two and was

one of the last Mustangs to be constructed at North Ameri-

can Aviation’s Dallas (TX) plant. It is thought she flew as part

of a reconnaissance squadron during the US military’s cam-

paign in Korea. In 1951, the Mustang was shipped back the

US to serve with the Air National Guard until around 1956. In

January 1999, she reappeared in North Dakota as a restora-

tion project. The restoration culminated in a first flight in

May 2007 with Steve Hinton at the controls. Following this

the Mustang was painted in the 55th Fighter Group scheme of

Captain Frank Birtciel’s P-51D 44-14561 and christened ‘Miss

Velma’.

All sixteen onboard this United States Marines Corps Hercu-

Transport Squadron) , died after the Herc crashed eleven kil-

ometres west-southwest of Itta Bena (MS), while on a flight

from MCAS Cherry Point (NC) to NAF El Centro (CA). It came

down in a soybean field and burst into flames, which con-

sumed the Lockheed. Eyewitnesses reported observing the

aircraft spiralling down before it impacted the ground. Early

reports suggest a mid-air explosion or structural damage

appeared to be the primary cause of this loss.

While Fat Albert of the Blue Angels was undergoing main-

accident.
