Radio Control Jet International - April-May 2018

(Tuis.) #1
As I have come to expect from KingTech, the
engine is of excellent quality, with the visible
internal parts of the engine being as nicely
produced and finished as the exterior, the

compressor in particular being superbly
machined, with a perfectly smooth and reflec-
tive surface. Equally nice is the turbine wheel,
with some very neat casting being evident, a
minimal amount of grinding having been
required to obtain perfect balance. In com-
mon with other G2 turbines the kerostart and
run valves are under the front cover, so the
engine has only a single fuel input connec-
tion, however there are two electrical connec-
tions, one for the power to the starter motor
and kero plug, the second for the internal
thermocouple, rpm sensor data and Rx input.
Given the high nominal thrust output the engi-
ne is very compact indeed, measuring only
254mm (10”) in length and 95.3mm (3.75”) in
diameter, thus being smaller than some 100
Newton thrust turbines.
Supplied along with the turbine itself was the
extremely neat KP-500 fuel pump, which as
per other recent KingTech turbine fuel
pumps, has a black anodised case, and is of
course of the new standard self priming type
with attached priming valve, usefully coming
complete with machined alloy mounting brac-
ket. Ancillary parts also supplied include the
new series 2 ECU in its attractive machined
alloy case, and the matching touchscreen
GSU, this also having the same style of case.
Further items included the required leads and
fuel tubing, machined alloy filter, manual fuel
valve, and the very detailed and clear English
language manual, with the only additional
item required being a 3 cell, 9.9v Li-Fe ECU
battery, (this can’t be included when the engi-
nes are shipped from Taiwan due to shipping
restrictions). Alternatively a 7 cell 8.4v Nickel
Metal Hydride battery can be used. Total
weight for the engine plus all ancillary parts
including suitable Li-Po battery came to a
fraction over 1.8Kg, very respectable for an
engine with a nominal thrust of 12.0Kg.
As detailed in previous KingTech reviews the
new Series 2 ECU brings a number of

front cover and turbine mounts, with the main
body of the turbine ranging in colour from
bronze at the front to brown at the rear, whilst
the tailcone is bare Inconel.

Superb machining is very evident in this view of the compressor.

Although slightly hard to see, the cast turbine wheel is also beautifully produced.
