“Here:youweedthebeans,you
water the onions and you mulch
the capsicums.” Soon they would be
hotortheirbackswouldhurtfrom
bendingover,andtheywouldleave
me to myself.
Butduringarecentspring,while
thumbing through seed catalogues,
I noticed my nine-year-old daughter,
Hope, cutting pictures from one of
mycopiesandpastingtheimageson
a piece of paper. She had a whole list
going.Weputourliststogetherand
ordered twice as many seeds as we
usually needed. 


AfewdayslaterIwastryingto
preparethesoil,andIhonestly
wasn’t enjoying my time of peace
and solitude. My 13-year-old son,
Josiah, picked up a spare spade
andbeganhelping.Workingasa
team,wehadthepeapatchdugup
and composted in no time at all. I
thanked Josiah, realising that I’d
enjoyed his company.
Thesamethinghappenedwith
picking up rocks and planting the
seeds–oneortwoofthechildren
wouldappeartowatchandthen
