05: DESIGN AMERICAN BARNS
LOCATION AUCKLAND
“I like the imperfection of the rustic style,”
claims homeowner Morella Lascurain of her
open-plan kitchen. With timber the main feature
of this reconstructed American barn home,
this streamline kitchen is unsurprisingly warm
and inviting. A wealth of windows surrounds
the space, allowing in plenty of natural light. In
contrast to the light-timber fl oor and honey-
hued window frames, the kitchen cabinets are
crafted of a richer walnut-coloured timber and
topped with dark benchtops. The darkness of
the materials seems to ground the space. A
discreet open-shelf pantry tucked behind
a wall provides convenient storage. Brick-look
tiles form the splashback and iron bar stools
with cowhide seats underscore the industrial
theme of the space.

06: DESIGN FIELD HOUSE
LOCATION BRIGHTON, VICTORIA
In keeping with the design of the home, this
modernist kitchen features a vivid ‘pop’ of
colour in the form of an organically shaped
orange-coloured kitchen island. This seamless
formation sits before fl oor-to-ceiling cabinetry,
making the modest but functional kitchen
the ultimate fi t for the homeowner’s vision of
an artistic space with colour as the surprise
element. Appliances, including an integrated
fridge, are hidden behind the black cabinetry
that lines the rear wall of the room, concealing
everything within to ensure the sleek and
uncluttered appearance that is the hallmark
of this residence.
