03: DESIGN CLASS HOUSE
LOCATION MELBOURNE
Like many Victorian-style homes, this cottage
was showing the weariness of wear and
tear and featured a fl oorplan that inhibited
the owners’ entertaining style. Going for a
more open-plan arrangement that puts the
kitchen in the centre of the action, the new
kitchen renovation is a contemporary dream
that nevertheless harmonises with the more
traditional elements of the home. Subway
tiles from bench to ceiling are broken by the
stainless-steel open shelving that surrounds
the rangehood in a seamless line. Open to the
rest of the living space, this kitchen forms an
island around which life in the house fl ows.

04: DESIGN SOUTH YORKSHIRE HOUSE
LOCATION SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK
Going for the open-plan layout that is so highly
prized these days is not always possible in older
homes. But what if your home was once a movie
theatre? With large open rooms and very high
ceilings, creating an open kitchen that fl ows into
the dining and living spaces of this family home
was made that much easier. A warm palette
of honey-toned timber skims the fl oor, while
concrete and timber rafters — which match the
colour of the butcher block counters — soar
above the kitchen’s work space. Floor-to-ceiling
windows and white cabinets refl ect natural light
to create a pleasant cooking environment. Bare-
bulb light fi xtures suspended from the ceiling
add an element of industrial to the area.
