For many homeowners bigger is better,
but in this petite home, small is perfect.
Homeowners Doctor Zewlan Moor and
husband Tom Naulty wanted a fuss-free
residence with a small footprint. Architects
Melody Chen and James Hung happily
delivered. “It was refreshing to see a client
who wanted a compact house and something
that was designed to suit their lifestyle,” says
Melody. Exposed chipboard is the primary
material used on the home’s interior, which
is bathed in natural light. In keeping with
the minimalist vibe of the space, lighting
was designed to be subtle; wall-mounted
spotlights feature throughout the interior
and exterior.

LOCATION PUKERUA BAY, NORTH ISLAND
A holiday home by the sea on a stretch of
beautiful rugged coastline is modest in
budget, but packs a visual punch that belies
its simplicity. It’s an innovative build on
several levels, with plenty of living space,
and some clever space-saver inclusions like
built-in furniture storage and shelving. An
urchin-like David Trubridge pendant takes
centre stage in the stairwell, creating light
and shadow against the contrasting timber
panels on the walls.

13: DESIGN MOUNT ALBERT HOUSE
LOCATION MOUNT ALBERT, AUCKLAND
Builder Nye O’Shannessy moved the existing
1940s bungalow to the rear of his block and
built this modern family dwelling in the front.
The home was built with three contrasting
materials — metal, wood and concrete —
and built-in furniture was also incorporated
into the build to save money and space.
Over the dining table a single pendant
light contrasts with the black accents in
the kitchen. In the living room three pendant
lights feature, creating a bold shimmer.
