05: DESIGN CHAMFER HOUSE
LOCATION MORNINGTON PENINSULA,
VICTORIA
The distinctive use of timber throughout
this family home is a signature of its original
designer, Kevin Borland. “The house was

typical of his late residential style, often
referred to as romantic rationalism,” says
architect Warwick Mihaly. The newly
renovated structure pays homage to the
mastery of its previous designer, with
modern tweaks in place to add a

contemporary feel. In the living room, a
fi replace is the hub of the home on cool
winter evenings as friends and family gather
around. With plenty of room for stacking
logs either side of the wood fi re, there’s no
need to head outside into the cold to add
fuel to the fi re.

06: DESIGN ROZELLE HOUSE
LOCATION ROZELLE, NEW SOUTH WALES
There are times when a home cannot be
salvaged and demolition is the best option.
This modern three-bedroom residence with
communal areas downstairs and private
spaces on the fi rst fl oor sits in the footprint
of a one-bedroom worker’s cottage. On the
ground fl oor, a wraparound timber deck is
one of its many clever features. There’s lots
of concrete in the build, and to complement
the edgy industrial look, a bespoke concrete
gas fi replace was constructed.
