05: DESIGN SOUTH YORKSHIRE HOUSE
LOCATION SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK
Imagine buying an old cinema and
turning it into the home of your dreams.
This brave UK couple did just that,
and the results are astonishing. One
of the most important considerations
was plenty of outdoor space, coupled
with a free-fl owing connection to the
outdoors. A four-metre hangar door
opens out to a large paved area and
grassy play space for the children. “The
boys have spent more time outside here
than they did in all the years at our old
house,” says entrepreneur homeowner
Gwyn. “Every night they’re either
playing football or they’re on their
bikes or in the pool.”

06: DESIGN LAVA TIVOLI TERRACE
LOCATION PADDINGTON, SYDNEY
With a compact home, creating a sense
of cohesion and connectedness to
outdoor spaces becomes even more
important. In this Sydney residence,
architect Chris Bosse extended the
living spaces with large timber sliders
that completely open up the area,
taking advantage of the space in
the small courtyard. “The best thing
about the design for us is that the
indoor-outdoor space works well for
entertaining,” says Chris. “There’s more
light, more space, and every surface is
a design element making a statement
with more than one function.”

07: DESIGN CLASS HOUSE
LOCATION MELBOURNE
A Victorian-era home was given a
complete renovation, the period details
preserved and a swag of modern
inclusions added to enhance the
liveability of the house. A new extension
was added to the rear of the home, as
well as a courtyard and swimming pool.
Now the family can unwind in their
spacious outdoor room, enjoy long
lazy Sunday lunches outdoors, or fi re
up the barbecue and entertain in style.
