03: DESIGN SOUTH YORKSHIRE HOUSE
LOCATION SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK
What’s old can become new again, and that’s
defi nitely a step in the right direction for
saving the planet. When homeowners Gwyn
ap Harri and wife Kate bought the old local
cinema to create their new home, they saved
a local landmark and created a stunning,
almost brutalist modern-style home with
white render and timber cladding. “Even
though it was a bit of a mad idea, it was
actually based on practicality,” says Gwyn.
They’d scoured the area for other properties
but would have shelled out more than $1
million to even be within the ballpark of
what they wanted.

04: DESIGN AMERICAN BARNS
LOCATION AUCKLAND
This 10-acre property that boasts a
meandering river fl owing through it is home
to a family of four and their larger-than-life
American barn-style home. They sourced a
company, Heritage Barns, in the USA, which
dismantles derelict barns and ships the well-
worn timbers all over the planet. The eastern
hemlock timber that forms a large part of

the 400-square-metre home is in fact
more than two centuries old. The 1810
timbers bare the ravages of their antiquity,
their dents and fi ssures a living history
that unites two parts of the globe. The
homeowners also own a saw mill, and
steel fi lters that once separated wood

chips from the pulp are repurposed as
banisters. There’s also a sarked ceiling in
recycled rimu.
