14: DESIGN CATALINA HOUSE
LOCATION AVALON BEACH, NEW SOUTH WALES
This was the location of choice for a growing
brood, so it didn’t makes sense for the family
of fi ve to give up their prized bungalow and
leave the beach behind just because they
needed more space. To give their residence
a serious boost, homeowners Beau and Nikki
Quarry called on London-based fi rm PH+
Architects to turn their vision into a reality
after they relocated to Sydney from the UK.
Having worked with the fi rm for some time,
they decided to continue their collaboration
on an international scale. “Given the close
working relationship we had developed, Beau
and Nikki were keen to involve us in the design
of their new home,” says Drew Hamilton of pH+
Architects. A fortuitous move as it turns out,
with the project leading to the fi rm opening a
second studio in Sydney. Utilising the existing
one-bedroom bungalow on the site, the
architects created a new design that provided
additional fl oor space to accommodate fi ve
bedrooms and larger living areas that refl ected
the owners’ desire for integrated indoor-
outdoor living. Large sections of the dwelling
open to the exterior setting, ensuring greenery
surrounds them at every turn. The resulting
build dissolves the barriers between indoors
and out in a harmonious fl ow that refl ects the
unique environment.

15: DESIGN CHAMFER HOUSE
LOCATION MORNINGTON PENINSULA, VICTORIA
Designed by iconic Australian architect Kevin
Borland, Hildebrand House was nothing short
of groundbreaking for its time. Originally
built in 1977 for the Hildebrands, the house
was purchased in 2011 by the current owners
who wanted to bring it into the 21st century,
while preserving its original style. Enter Mihaly
Slocombe architects. “The house was typical
of Kevin’s late residential style, often referred
to as romantic rationalism: post and beam
construction, timber linings, a strict 5 x 5-metre
grid and loose triangular geometry,” says
architect Warwick Mihaly. Desirous of a more
relaxed family residence, homeowners Faith
and Rohan reached out to Mihaly Slocombe
to craft them a home that would last them
20 years or more. “They loved the original
structural features, but wanted to modernise the
interior fi t-out to sharpen up the overall feel,”
explains Warwick. Utilising the already unique
layout in which the living spaces sit on the fi rst
fl oor with the bedrooms below, the architects
“unkinked the plan, pulled back a touch on the
1970s psychedelics and reconfi gured the living
and sleeping areas to better connect with the
garden” to create a more versatile fl ow for the
current occupants.
