13: DESIGN NORTHCOTE HOUSE
LOCATION NORTHCOTE, VICTORIA
Purchased pre-family, this old two-bedroom
Edwardian weatherboard home became a
juggling act as the number of inhabitants
expanded over the years. When four daughters
and the cat came along, the family decided a
major renovation was needed. Converting their
two-bedroom cottage into a two-storey four-
bedroom abode required the expertise of Sally
Timmins and David Whyte from Timmins+Whyte
architectural fi rm to give them the space they
needed. Perched on a long narrow block, the
design brief was to create specifi c zones that
off ered the best in both private and public
spaces. “The house had to have the ability to
create zones so the individual could fi nd space
for solitude and occasionally isolate the children’s
activities and sound from the adults,” says Sally.
“We were inspired by the feeling of holidaying in
a pitched tent in the bush.” Demolition opened
up the downstairs space to be reconfi gured. With
the fl oorspace extended, this area now consists
of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, dining
and living spaces, including a home offi ce. The
added second fl oor contains two bedrooms
and a bathroom. “Essentially a whole new house
was built at the back of the two front rooms and
entry hall,” says Sally.
