4WD Touring Australia – June 2018

(Ben Green) #1

L

ying in my sleeping bag, I feel like a man
buried alive, my nostrils and eyes the only
things protruding into the icy night air.
Despite the outside temperature being colder
than an iceberg, and the winds lashing at the
camper like a madman trying to get in, I am
surprisingly warm.
We have just retired to the shelter of the
camper, having spent the day exploring the
Victorian High Country with its winter snow
blanketing the tussock grass and snow-gums.
With the cooler weather arriving, many pack
their tent or camper into mothballs and go into

hibernation until the spring blossoms give the
sign it is safe to go back outside.
However, if you are well prepared, winter
camp-outs can be some of the most memorable.
The ies have disappeared, voiding the summer
ritual of drowning yourself in repellant, and the
hordes of weekend warriors are nowhere to
be seen, meaning you can have your choice of
pretty much any campsite.
While the cold denitely requires a little
more forethought, the following list of simple
tips should help make your next winter sortie
memorable for all the right reasons...
