(John Hannent) #1
Four-patch block. Use the method
described in Step 5 to sew the
squares for each block together in
pairs, then join the pairs to make
a Four-patch block. Press. The blocks
should measure 6^11 ⁄ 2 in square from
raw edge to raw edge.

Assembly

15

From the beige print
fabric, cut:

  • One square, 9^3 ⁄ 4 in. Cut it twice
across the diagonals to yield four
    quarter-square triangles (side
    setting triangles).

16

From each of four assorted
fabrics, cut:

  • One rectangle, 4^7 ⁄ 8 x9^3 ⁄ 4 in. Lightly
mark the centre of one long edge on
these rectangles. Cut from the bottom
corners to this mark on each side to
yield two small triangles (which are
not used in this project) and one large
triangle, which is a setting triangle.
    See Diagram 1.

17

From each of four assorted
fabrics, cut:

  • One square, 5^1 ⁄ 8 in. Cut it once on
the diagonal to yield two half-square
triangles. Only one is used in this
    project (corners).

18

The quilt centre is assembled
in diagonal rows. Lay out the
nine Lemoyne Star blocks and the
four Four-patch blocks ‘on point’ in
diagonal rows, referring to the Quilt
Assembly Diagram and photograph
as guides. Jennifer positioned the
three Lemoyne Star blocks with black
print backgrounds so they formed
a row across the centre of her quilt.
She also orientated each Four-patch
block so that the darker patches were
in the left and right corners of the
block and the lighter patches were
in the top and bottom corners.

19

Add the beige side setting
triangles to the layout along
the left and right edges and the side
setting triangles cut from assorted
fabrics along the top and bottom

edges. Position a half-square triangle
from Step 17 in each corner.

20

When you have an
arrangement that you like, join
the blocks and triangles together in
diagonal rows. Press the seams away
from the Lemoyne Star blocks. Then
sew the rows together.

21

Sew the corner triangles in
place to complete the centre
of the quilt.

Add the borders

22

From each of two 20cm (8in)
squares of print fabric, cut:

  • Four squares, 3^1 ⁄ 2 in (border
    cornerstones).

23

From each of the four print
fabrics for the borders, cut:

  • Two strips, 3in across the width
    of the fabric.

24

Choose which two fabrics you
will use for Border 1, which
two fabrics you will use for Border 2,
and which fabrics you will use for
the cornerstones in each border.

25

Measure your quilt horizontally
and vertically through the

centre. Trim your Border 1 strips
to this length. Sew matching strips
to the top and bottom edges of the
quilt. Press.

26

Sew a cornerstone to each
end of the remaining two
strips, then sew these strips to the
left and right edges of the quilt,
carefully matching seams. Press.

27

Repeat Steps 24 and 25 with
the remaining strips and
cornerstones to add Border 2 to
the quilt.

Finishing

28

The quilt top, backing and
batting are ready to take to
a long-arm quilter as they are. If
you’re doing the quilting yourself,
smooth out the backing fabric on the
fl oor with right side down and secure
it with masking tape. Lay the batting
on top, ensuring it is free of wrinkles.
After pressing the quilt top, lay it,
right side up, on top of the batting
and baste the three layers together
with safety pins (or thread if you’re
hand quilting).
