Preparation and cutting
1
Trace three peapod shapes,
three pod husks and three leaf
caps from the Pattern Sheet onto
the paper side of the fusible web
with a pencil, leaving about^11 ⁄ 2 in
between the shapes.
2
Cut the shapes out roughly and
fuse them, glue side down, to
the wrong side of the selected bright
coloured fabrics. Cut the shapes
out carefully on the lines with small,
sharp scissors.
3
Photocopy or trace the hexagon
shape 15 times and cut them
out precisely.
4
From the natural linen, cut:
- One rectangle, 12^1 ⁄ 2 x17^1 ⁄ 2 in
(outer pouch).
5
From both the check fabric
and the bag batting, cut:
- One rectangle, 15 x 19in (lining).
6
From each of the two different
print fabrics, cut:
- One rectangle, 6^1 ⁄ 2 x12^1 ⁄ 2 in
(internal divider).
7
From the remaining bright
coloured fabrics, cut:
- Five squares, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in in assorted
green fabrics (peas) - Five squares, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in in assorted
orange fabrics (peas) - Five squares, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in in assorted
pink fabrics (peas).
8
From the black and white
stripe print fabric, cut:
- Two strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric (binding).
9
From the lightweight fusible
interfacing, cut:
- Two rectangles, 6 x 12^1 ⁄ 2 in
(internal divider).
Appliqué and embroidery
10
Rule two light pencil lines
across the linen rectangle 5^1 ⁄ 2 in
down from the top edge and another
6in below that, as shown in Diagram 1.
The appliqué goes between these lines.
11
Peel the backing paper from
the appliqué shapes and
arrange them in the centre section
of the linen rectangle, as shown in
the photograph. Position the pods
first, then the husks followed by the
leaf caps, overlapping the shapes
slightly as shown.
12
When you’re happy with the
arrangement, press with a hot
dry iron to fuse the shapes in place.
13
Set up the machine to sew
a short, narrow zigzag stitch
(not satin stitch) and thread the top
with a colour to match one of the
appliqué fabrics. You might want
to test the stitch on a sample piece
and adjust it if needed.
14
Sew around the fi rst shape
with zigzag stitch: the stitches
should cover the edge of the shape
and just fall off its edge – the
stitching shouldn’t be visible on
the linen. Repeat to appliqué all
the shapes in place, changing the
thread colours as needed to match
the fabrics.
15
To prepare the hexagons,
centre a paper shape on the
wrong side of a 1^1 ⁄ 2 in fabric square
and pin it in place. You can trim
the surplus fabric at the corners to
minimise bulk if you wish, making
sure there’s an adequate seam
allowance all the way around. Fold
the edges of the fabric over the
paper shape and baste them in
place. Spray starch both sides
and press well.
16
Snip the basting and
remove the paper shapes
from inside the fabric hexagons.
Arrange the fabric hexagons in
sets of fi ve along the pods as peas.
When you’re happy with the layout,
use a fabric glue stick to baste
them in place.
17
Repeat Step 14 to stitch
them in position.
18
With a pencil, lightly draw
freehand three curling
tendrils from the leaf caps.
