DOWNWARD-FACING CAT?
City life stressing you out? Australia’s first cat café, Catmosphere
Space Cat Café, has recently opened its doors in Surry Hills, Sydney.
The café works with stray cat rescue groups to recruit rescue cats in
need of homes. The good news for yogi cat lovers? Not only can
you enjoy a coffee and a kitty cuddle, the café now offers ‘cat yoga’.
What exactly does that entail? Well, it’s just like a regular yoga class
but with cats crawling underneath your down dog and playing with
your hair while you attempt to salute the sun,
followed by 15 minutes of
kitty cuddle time. Make
sure to book your space
though. When we checked,
weekly classes were booked
out for the next two months!

Preconceived

beliefs trump logic

and reality
A recent study by Kyoto
University researchers found
that your brain sometimes sees
what it wants rather than what is actually there. The study
involved using virtual mazes with MRI scans of brain activity
while subjects were being asked to navigate through the maze. The
research investigated whether a person’s preconceptions could be
represented in brain activity. Findings indicated that “when people
try to get from one place to another, they ‘foresee’ the upcoming
landscape in their minds”, says author Yumi Shikauchi. The study
showed that the human sense of objectivity could be overridden by
preconception, even when those expectations were wrong. That is,
expectations impact on your ability to think logically. So, can you
let those expectations go? Ommmm.

City Silence is a network of community
mindfulness meditation gatherings,
working their way around cities
globally. Meditators are invited to sit in
silence for as long and often as they
like, free of charge and guided by
experienced volunteers. “City silence
is connecting to each other in the
space of silence, where we are all the
same, where we are all just humans
who want to feel better and do good
in the world,” says Founder Stacy
Sims. Find or host a local event at
