health levels, and also works out
your brain. “This is a really good
workout,” says Dave Shoebridge,
instructor at Advanced Martial Arts
and Fitness (amaf.com.au). “But the
main thing we teach in kickboxing
is confidence. We’re giving our
students the confidence to feel like
they can stand up for themselves
in all areas of their lives. It teaches
discipline and perseverance.” This
explains why Katniss and Tris are
focused. Of course, discipline isn’t
just doing what you’re told (ahem,
Tris...), it’s about having the menta
energy to get on with a task with to
concentration. This is not only goin
to help you out when you don’t wa
to do another round of left hooks to
punching bag, but will also help yo
nail that upcoming science test you
worried about – you know, the one
you lack motivation to study for.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT


WHAT IS IT?
Kickboxing is a martial art that started in Asia and
different forms of it have been around for hundreds of
years. It was pretty hardcore: skin-to-skin contact with
no padding! Since becoming widely known in the ’60s,
it’s been taken up as a social sport that’s more about
kicking butt in fitness than actual violence (phew). It uses
moves like kicking, punching and sparring with partners,

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
First thing’s first, don’t be put off if kickboxing
kind of comes across as a less-techy version of
The Training Centre. And no, there won’t be any
bow-and-arrow skill-testing (sorry, Katniss). Kickboxing
classes are usually run at local YMCAs, community halls
and boxing gyms. “Basically, in one kickboxing class
