SCENTS SENSIBILITY

The two most important factors
in choosing anti-stink are
sweat and odour protection.
Antiperspirants inhibit sweating
while deodorant kills the bacteria
that cause odour (sweat itself
doesn’t smell). If you sweat
profusely, use an antiperspirant
deodorant for extra protection.
Many experts recommend putting
on antiperspirant before bed
at night and then reapplying it
in the morning. “For regular
aerosols and roll-ons, you can
apply whenever you like – after
a shower would be ideal to treat
the skin dryness that commonly
occurs through showering and
shaving,” says Dove research
and development guru Daniel
Mullette. If you suffer dry
skin, consider a roll-on as the
formulations often include
more moisturising ingredients
than spray counterparts. As a
bonus, they also go on more
evenly than sprays. If taking

the antiperspirant route, favour
natural products to minimise
risk of exposure to aluminium
chlorohydrate, which is a
common active ingredient and
can accumulate in the body and
brain. While manufacturers must
list all ingredients on packaging,
they do not need to declare the
amounts of active ingredients,
although a Choice poll found that
percentages were as high as 20 per
cent aluminium while Garnier
scored best with 10 per cent.

EYE ENHANCER

Save space in your gym bag by ditching the mechanical
curler and use a curling mascara instead. Always opt for a
waterproof variety as your body temperature is still high.
Keep the rest of your eye make-up minimal, dabbing on
some brightening eye shadow at the inner corners to make
them pop. You won’t need a whole lot of blush, as working
out leaves you with a natural flush. A double-duty cheek
and lip colour will do the trick.

THE ISSUE:

WORKOUT

MAKE-UP
DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO REMOVE YOUR
MAKE-UP BEFORE SPIN CLASS? AH, YAIR-AH.
If you re-do your foundation before gym (what, in case
there’s a Victoria’s Secret scout prowling the ’burbs?), your
poseur ways could be a self-fulfilling prophecy, causing
the kinds of blemishes you need to cover up. Here’s the bit
where we try to convince you to ditch the éclat for class.

» WORKING OUT WITH HEAVY MAKE-UP MAKES SKIN
PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO BREAKOUTS, as pores
automatically open up when the body heats up. As the TV
commercials say, your skin needs time to ‘breathe’. Even
tiny mica and micronised particles in pressed powders and
eye shadows can be small enough to enter pores and lead
to breakouts.
» MAKE-UP INFUSED WITH SWEAT CAN DRIP DOWN
AND CAUSE IRRITATION TO OUR EYES. Even waterproof
formulas are inclined to do this. Avoid irritation by wiping it
away before you begin.
» DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. Think about
how much you spend on make-up. And then think about
how much you wipe and blot away during your intense
cardio session.
» AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE WHILE WORKING OUT.
Bacteria can easily transfer from the equipment, wreaking
havoc on your skin. Gym towels don’t help. They may look
clean, but bacteria can live in the fibres of the cloth if it isn’t
replaced frequently enough.
