Because the Naica cave had lain underwater for millennia,
the selenite crystals were able to grow into immense columns.
Only in 1985 when mine workers dried out the cave did this
process come to an abrupt halt: The giants solidifi ed as if
frozen in time and for a short while scientists were afforded
