An Italian private equity company recently bought a majority
stake in Hood’s Essex operation JD Classics, which restores
period racing cars , in a deal that ought to have been worth at
least £150m to Charme Capital Partners. JD Classics is also a
main partner of motor sport events including the Goodwood
Revival. Billericay-born Hood, 57 on Friday, trained as a dentist
but turned his passion for restoring Jaguars into a business in

    support for the car maker’s fleet of historic vehicles. In 2015-16
    JD Classics saw profits soar to £21.1m on £121.8m sales and Hood

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN AND EMMA THOMAS
Films

London-born film director Nolan’s Dunkirk is among the most
keenly anticipated cinema releases of this summer. He wrote and
directed the wartime epic featuring Sir Kenneth Branagh and
One Direction heart-throb Harry Styles in his screen debut.
Nolan’s production par tner and wife, Thomas, 48, worked with
him on the movie, said to be ea rning him $20m, plus 20% of gross
takings. It is Nolan’s first feature since his sci-fi drama Interstellar
in 2014, which took more than $675m. Inception, his 2010 fantasy
thriller, grossed $825m and received eight Oscar nominations.
Nolan, 46, persuaded Warner Bros to revive the Batman
franchise, with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark
Knight Rises taking $2.4bn at the cinema. 2016: £110m, 885=

Car parts

Andrew Page is one of the UK’s leading distributors of car parts,
with more than 100 branches. The Leeds business was sold last
year to US-owned LKQ Corporation. An earlier sale in 2010
netted the family £109m. Page, 64, stayed on as chairman and

Adele’s album 25, which sold a record-breaking 17.4m copies
worldwide in the final five weeks of 2015, allowed former DJ
Russell, 46, and business partner Martin Mills (qv) to say Hello to
runaway success for their London label XL Recordings. Russell
and Mills own half each of the business. In 2011 Adele’s album 21
transformed its prospects and 2015 was XL’s best year yet, with
profits humming along to £29.2m on sales of £76.5m. Its assets
rose from £14.1m to £37m , making it worth £200m. New entry

FREDDY SHEPHERD AND FAMILY
Industry

Shepherd, 75, stepped down as the chairman of Newcastle
United football club i n 2007 after its takeover by Mike Ashley
(qv). He joined his family’s industrial business in the 1960s and
oversaw the quayside development of a disused Tyneside
brewery. The family owns the Neptune shipyard, which is to
become a renewable-energy park. In 2015-16 Shepherd Offshore
Group saw profits hit £9.5m and is worth £100m. The separate
Mitford farming operation has assets of £12m. New entry

THE EARL OF STOCKTON AND THE MACMILLAN FAMILY
Publishing

Stockton, 73, is the grandson of former prime minister Harold
Macmillan, and his family had a 93% stake in the Macmillan

publishing business. Most of it was sold in 1995, netting the
family £130m. Stockton, who lives in Denham, Buckinghamshire,
and his second wife, Miranda Quarry, who was the third spouse of
the late actor Peter Sellers, divorced in 2011. The settlement cost
Stockton £3m to end an unhappy chapter. 2016: £120m, 831=

ROGER TAYLOR

Queen will tour this summer with 25 shows across North
America. Donald Trump walked out on stage at last year’s
Republican national convention to the strains of the band’s We
Are the Champions, but drummer Taylor, 67, was not amused.
“We didn’t write a political song,” he said. Queen Productions paid
the band, including guitarist Brian May (qv), more than £80m in
the 10 years to 2015. There was also a tour across Asia and
Europe as well as new releases. 2016: £115m, 862=

His sister, dressage rider Laura Tomlinson, won a team gold and

The Carrs’ £110m car dealership Helston Garages Group has 37
branches in the West Country, selling Ferraris, Maseratis and
Jaguars as well as Skodas, Peugeots and Volkswagens. Carr, 79,
and his wife, Betty, 76, own the lot. Profits hit £14.9m on £517.8m
sales in 2015 and it has £77.3m assets. 2016: £106m, 931=

TOM JOULE AND FAMILY

Joule, 49, earned more than £40m from last year’s £140m AIM
float of Joules, purveyor of vivid wellies and country-inspired
casualwear. The company was set up in Market Harborough in
1973 by his father, Ian, who made hats for the royal family. Joule Jr
took the business into fashion when his rural friends complained
about only being able to find sombre clothes to wear at the
weekend. Joule’s stake is worth £60m. 2016: £110m, 885=

DOREEN LOFTHOUSE AND FAMILY
Cough lozenges

The super-strong cough lozenges Fisherman’s Friend were first
concocted in 1865 by the chemist James Lofthouse in the
Lancashire seaside town of Fleetwood. The original menthol
recipe was essential kit for local fishermen in freezing conditions,
and now 23 flavours are exported to 120 countries. James’s
great-grandson Tony married Doreen, 87, who transformed the
business into global brand Lofthouse of Fleetwood. Profits nearly
tripled to almost £5.8m on £51.2m sales in 2016. With net assets
of £77.6m and a strong brand, it is worth £100m. The family’s
Lofthouse Foundation has aided local projects such as the £2.6m
redevelopment of Fleetwood Hospital. “Money means little,” says
Doreen. “I am driven because I enjoy every minute of the working
