India offers Apple tax sops

to expand production

India has offered to let Apple import

mobile handset components for

use in local manufacturing tax free.

The tax concessions will be subject

to the condition of increasing local

value addition over a period of time.

Apple wants to expand its con-

tract manufacturer Wistron’s facility

in Bengaluru as it seeks a bigger

share in one of the world’s biggest

smartphone markets. The company

has just recently started making

iPhone SE in Bengaluru.

Among a set of tax concessions,

Apple had initially sought a 15-

year tax holiday on the import of

all components. A panel of minis-

tries rejected that demand and has

instead offered tax exemptions on

components that cannot be manu-

factured in India.

Samsung to double mobile

phone production in India

Samsung Electronics plans to double

the production capacity for mo-

bile phones and fridges at its main

factory in India. The South Korean

electronics major would spend ` 49

billion over three years to expand

the factory on the outskirts of New

Delhi. It also manufactures TV sets

at the plant.

“Samsung would want to reduce

their dependence on manufacturing

in Vietnam and shift more opera-

tions to India,” said Tarun Pathak,

associate director at technology

research firm Counterpoint. “India

looks like a promising manufactur-

ing hub in the coming years and

Samsung could make it their base

for exports.”

Panasonic eyes 10 per cent

TV panels share by year-end
