The Cards
Steve Charendoff, president of
Rittenhouse Archives, was still
finalizing details at press time but
did have some tantalizing tidbits
as to what collectors can expect.
Charendoff says, “This will be a
more limited edition than our usual
season-themed trading card sets for
Game of Thrones. The configuration
will also be quite different than our
usual series of cards.” Quite different
is right, the 100-card base set will con-
sist of metal cards, very fitting for this
title, and cover events and characters
from all seasons. The chase sets are
still in the planning stage but look
for Motion cards and detailed Laser
Cut cards. Rittenhouse’s Season Six
GOT set included a case-topping
metal promo for Valyrian Steel,
numbered CT1.
The Hits
The autographs will be very
sought after, appearing in Gold and
Valyrian Steel versions. Charendoff
also noted, “All of the autos will be
important characters. There will be
no autos of actors who appeared in
[only] one episode.”
Also, look for dual autographs
(e.g. Kit Harington as Jon Snow
with Rose Leslie as Ygritte, among
many other character combina-
tions). Relic cards will be included
as will something new called Pin
Cards. Pins will feature replicas of
items worn on the show.
Charendoff says, “One of the pins
is a Hand-of-the-Queen pin that
Daenerys gives to Tyrion at the end
of last season.”
One final “hit” will be the amaz-
ing sketch cards.
“David Desbois has drawn some
original portrait/sketch cards that
will be randomly inserted into the
packs — these will be our very first
character-based sketch cards, since
the sketch cards we’ve included in
past GOT sets have featured more
generic images without specific
characters. I expect these original
portrait sketch cards to be among
the most highly coveted GOT cards
we’ve ever produced,” Charendoff
commented.
The Packaging
Boxes will contain three packs,
with contents of a pack to be
decided.
Boxes will retail for around
$149.99, putting packs in the $50
range, which falls in line with pric-
ing for previous special edition sets,
such as Falling Skies and Spartacus.
Charendoff says, “Each pack will
contain a high-end hit (gold auto-
graph, Valyrian Steel autograph,
dual autograph, sketch cards, etc.).”
So, like the metal for which it
is named, Game of Thrones Valyr-
ian Steel Special Edition Trading
Cards will remain somewhat of
a mystery until its release. Watch
for it this September. NSU
“A knight in full armor can shrug off swords, spears and axes.
But Valyrian steel slices through his protections like so
much cloth. As advanced as iron is from bronze, so is
Valyrian steel from ordinary steel.”
