STUFF TO DO
4WDing is fairly gentle through the park for the most
part, but there are some sandy sections that warrant
a little extra caution. Suitable for all 4WD vehicles, but
remember to air down tyres, carry spares and some basic
recovery gear.
The Pink Lakes are a famous attraction and garner
their alien hue from a strain of algae that grows in
the clear, salty water. Lake Kenyon, Lake Crosbie and Lake
Becking are the most well known lakes in the park and can
be viewed from the park’s main walking tracks.

DAY DREAMS

PACK THE 4WD AND
HIT THE ROAD
PAT WILLIAMS

W

hile the outback might only exist in the dreams of many shuttered inner city
residents, Melbourne based adventurers in the know have got the Murray-Sunset
National Park. A proper slice of outback heaven begging to be explored, located less than
a day’s drive from Brunswick’s trendy bars and cafes.
The Murray-Sunset National Park protects a low-lying expanse of semi arid wilderness
and is considered the heart of Victoria’s unique outback region. This part of the state can
be sweltering during the summer months, but offers a fascinating diversion from city life
from autumn through spring.
The famous pink lakes provide endless photographic opportunities and the springtime
wildower blooms are an awesome natural spectacle. Visitors can also poke around the
scattered relics of the area’s salt mining past.
It’s necessary to factor in half a day’s drive each way from the big smoke, so a trip out to
Murray-Sunset is best spread over three or four days at a minimum.
