(やまだぃちぅ) #1

to the Flame and Pool.
The Flame of Remembrance
(a symbol of honour and respect,
with a continuously burning
flame from the Canberra War
Memorial) and Pool of Reflection
(holding water from the
world’s five oceans) are
part of the State War
Memorial near the
Cenotaph, where
locals and visitors
pay their respects.
While here, take a
moment to yourself,
before admiring the
view across the city and
Swan River.
Follow Hacketts Path to the
36-tonne living boab tree that is
named Gija Jumulu, after the
traditional owners (the Gija
people) of the land where it
originates from – in Warmun,
East Kimberley. This tree is more
than 750 years old, stands 14
metres tall, and travelled 3200km
from Warmun to its new home in
Kings Park in July 2008.
After visiting this gentle giant,
continue onto the Lotterywest
Federation Walkway, which will
take you into the treetop walk,
including a glass and steel arched

bridge elevated
16m above the
ground and
opening up to a
breathtaking view
across a canopy of tall eucalypts
(sadly, you won’t spot any koalas).
Once you’ve completed this
walk, continue along the urban
bushland trail named Law Walk,
until you hit the Crawley Steps,
which you will climb down until
you reach Mounts Bay Road.
Want to avoid the steps? Follow
the walk to Park Avenue, turning
left onto Kings Park Avenue (this
is a steep hill), or to Crawley
Avenue onto Mounts Bay Road.
From the steps you will find
yourself at the iconic Blue Boat
House, more formally known as

the Crawley Edge Boatshed. Built
in the 1930s it has been made
famous by photographers and
Instagrammers alike; and you will
likely see people taking photos!
If you have completed your step
count by now, congratulations!
To head back to Elizabeth Quay,
walk to the bus stop on the
opposite side of the road to the
Blue Boat House. Bus 107 will
take you there directly – easy!
If not, or you want to carry
on from the boatshed, you can
continue past, crossing the road
to explore the grounds of the
University of Western Australia
(UWA), or follow the waters along
Matilda Bay, finding a nice spot
to sit down and celebrate the
accomplishment of your day. ■
