Sticker Bombed Bay

Hi David,
Flicking through the latest issue of Camper and Commercial I noticed
an orange ‘sticker bombed’ early Bay High top pictured in a show
report. It was great to see it as it’s owned by my partner’s parents, Steve
and Rachel Burgess! The bus is a 73 factory high roofer called Lyle and
he’s been owned by them for the last 14 years. Contrary to sensible
advice they bought Lyle the Pile sight unseen in an eBay bidding war
and driving it home from Manchester was hair raising, the petrol gauge
didn’t work and the engine cut out every time it got below 10mph.
Back home their local VW specialist was absolutely horrified - rust and
filler everywhere and the front step had been padded with newspaper
and covered with fibreglass! A whole new front section was fitted and
since then he has been on the road and miraculously goes through each
MOT without too much work needed. Steve says “We have slept our
family of 6 plus a dog in him and used him every year. As the children
grew he had 3 different interiors and several types of awning to adapt
to different combinations of small children and teenagers. The stickers
began as a way to hide the rust on the tailgate, which didn’t open for 11
years. When the tailgate was replaced the signs had to move and then
they just seemed to multiply. Some of the signs are magnets, proving
that contrary to popular belief, there is actually metal there and not just
filler and signs. We love the fact that people have taken photos of Lyle
in a traffic jam on the dual carriageway and that children remember the
bus from shows and come to see what new signs have appeared. Lyle
has even won awards: won Best Sticker Bombed at October Fest, Best
Stickered at Final Fling and Best Rat at Dubs at the Mill.”
Keep up the great work with the mag!
All the best,

Matt Pacey, Steve and Rach

Still In The Family

David
This is my 71 Campmobile, Boofant, a part of my total family. My folks
bought it six months before my birthday and it now has been passed on
to me to take care of it. I repaired our loved family member and look
forward to another 50 years of Stardate log book entries. Maybe this is
story for your magazine?
Marc

We love stories about a bus that’s been with different generations of the
same family, if you have one in your family tell us about it!
