Cleaning

(pictures 1-3)

The key to a good rustproofing job is in the preparation work, so
do not rush this part. Take your time assessing the condition of
the underside of the Bus, planning which areas to rustproof and
removing any parts, such as undertrays (belly pans). Use a variety of
wire brushes, wire wheels and other cleaning tools to scrub off any
dirt, flaky paint, surface corrosion and dried underseal. This will
probably take a few hours to complete, but it’s important to ensure
that the metalwork is thoroughly protected. When cleaning the
underside, wear a breathing mask, gloves and goggles (or glasses) to
protect your lungs, skin and eyes.

Paint protection first
(pictures 4-6)

Any bare metal should be protected with a primer, followed by a
suitable paint (e.g. stonechip). Light corrosion that hasn’t resulted
in rusty holes can be cleaned away with a wire brush, then treated
with a rust cure, which helps to turn the remaining rust into iron
tannate and hopefully prevent further corrosion occurring – this
area will then need to be painted to further protect it.
If corrosion has resulted in the metalwork crumbling and large
holes appearing, then there is no paint solution available to fix this
problem. The metalwork needs to be cut out and repaired.
