Padstow: a step-by-step guide
Each stage is built up drawing paths then converting them into layers, one on top of
the other, to create the final picture. Some pictures have over 300 layers.
Create a shape for the sky and sea
and drop in the chosen colour. Add
the text and heading.
I added boats in bright colours to
draw the eye into the centre. I like
negative space, gaps and white space
so the image isn't too over-worked.
Start building up background layers.
Draw the paths and turn them into
layers, adding the colour. I added
seagulls to draw you to the centre.
Add colourful buoys and shadows to
gain depth and add interest to the
picture. Keep the focus onto the centre
of the picture.
Working forwards, add more shapes
and layers, using contrast colours to
make elements stand out. Highlights
and lowlights make shapes look 3D.
I've added a moored boat to the front
of the picture to give a notion of a
moving, working harbour. It anchors
the composition and gives depth, too.
