There’s good news for health-conscious wine
drinkers. The New Zealand government and the
country’s winegrowersare investing in the production
of low-calorie, low-alcohol “lifestyle wines”.
The government plans to invest NZ$ 8.13 million
(about €5 million), with an additional NZ$ 8.84 mil-
lion coming from the domestic wine industry. Philip
Gregan, chief executive officerof New Zealand Wine,
which represents the country’s winegrowers, told
The Guardianthat the seven-year researchpro-
gramme will concentrate on “developing new, natur-
al techniquesfor grapevinegrowth and wine produc-
tion”.
The difficulty will be producing wine that tastes
good. According to Justin Howard-Sneyd of the
British mail-orderwine company Laithwaite’s, the
riper the grape, the better the wine tastes. But riper
grapes produce wine containing more alcohol. “If
they can produce very delicious-tasting, high-quality
wine that has low alcohol levels, I think that will be
welcomed by the industry and by customers,”
Howard-Sneyd says. “But it is a challenge.”NEW ZEALAND
