NEW CARBON CRUISER
McConaghy Boats are probably best known to Y&Y readers for building top end racers – from all-carbon
Moths to Fast40+ and even AC50 foiling cats. But they also produce other cra, where their expertise,
particularly in carbon, can be put to best use. Here, renowned designer, German Frers has teamed up
with McConaghy to produce what threatens to be an incredibly fast all-carbon 57 cruiser. Every part
of the boat from design to t-out will be focussed on reducing weight and maintaining performance.
A key driver of the design was minimising impact on the environment; as such the cruiser has two
electric sail-drives with hydro-regeneration capacity, solar panels, and a waste treatment system.

KIT CARLIER DESIGNS
NEW Inflatable sail
In recent years there have been a
number of companies developing soft
sails, which also oer the benefits of
a solid wing. One such example is this
‘inflatable’ wing sail, which picked up an
innovation award at the Paris Boat Show.
It may look like a practical joke, but
a glance at the online videos of the
boat sailing are enough to change
your mind. Then there are the people
behind the concept: Lead designer,
Edouard Kessi, is one of the people
behind developing sails for Alinghi,
which went on to become North 3Dis;
Laurent de Kalbermatten introduced
the first production paraglider in the
1980s; Stéphane Fauve managed the
R&D at North Sails France. The rig is
comprised of a telescopic mast around
which is a fabric sitting on a number
of ribs. As the mast is extended, air
blows into scoops in the front of the
sail and inflates it to create shape.
