One of the world’s biggest-ever dinghy racing

events will see 1,500 competitors celebrating 25

years of RS sailing at Weymouth and Portland

National Sailing Academy this summer.

More than 1,000 boats from around 30

nations are expected for the RS Games at

Weymouth & Portland National Sailing

Academy, to be held over the period 4-25 August,

combining top class racing with a vibrant

RS après-sail social scene for the RS500, RS

Tera and RS Aero World Championships, the

RS100, RS400, RS700 and RS Feva European

Championships, and the RS200, RS300,

RS600, RS800 and RS Vareo UK Nationals.

Trust celebrates

20th anniversary

The John Merricks Sailing

Trust raised £4,407.34 whilst

celebrating 20 years of

supporting youth sailing

at its anniversary party at

the Royal Southern YC.

Trust patron Sir Ben

Ainslie and trustees Camilla

Bullock, Rod Carr, Jim

Saltonstall and Ian Walker,

were joined by many more

stars of British sailing

and friends of the trust.

Opihr Gin supported

the event, Mark Covell

was the DJ and Richard

Langdon of Ocean Images,

kindly produced a video,

which premiered at the

party, highlighting the

important work of the

trust over the years.

New watersports centre at Burghfield for

Andrew Simpson Foundation

The Andrew Simpson Foundation has

announced the opening of a watersports

centre in Reding (left), following 

merger with Berkshire Sil Trining

Centre (BSTC). The ll-yer-round

fcility is set to increse participation

in sailing and other watersports.

BSTC chairman Bernard Fyans said:

“The centre has operated at Theale

Lake for over 50 years under various

titles providing sail training for children.

The trustees and I are pleased we have

merged with a charity with similar

objectives, but much wider resources.”

The Reading base will, with the

academy facilities at Weymouth and

Portland, help fulfil the ASF’s aims of

delivering flagship community sailing

programmes and access for young

people aged five to 24.
