DIARY DATES

J

ude Massey, the world’s
youngest person to row the
Atlantic in a two-man team,
made a return visit to Beaulieu
in April to open the 41st annual
Boatjumble.
The 19-year-old opened the
event by ringing a ship’s bell
mounted on oak from the
Beaulieu Estate in Hampshire.
“I’m very, very excited to be
here, because this is the first
show we did during our
fundraising,” he told PBO.
During the 53-day crossing,
Jude and his brother Greg
Bailey lost their GPS,
watermaker and autohelm, so
had to manually steer for the
entire voyage.
“We had a domino stack of
errors that were devastating,
but Greg and I pushed through
it and we’re very happy to be
back on dry land,” said Jude.
“In the first week I was really
homesick. I just wanted to set
off a flare and EPIRB and get in
the liferaft!”
However, there were many
high points, too, including an
encounter with two huge
humpback whales and 250
dolphins. Jude and Greg hit
their target of raising £100,
for the British Skin Foundation
in memory of their late father,
Peter Massey. PBO caught up
with Jude at the Boatjumble.

Beaulieu Boatjumble

by PBO’s panel of experts,
whose talks on everything from
sea survival to ‘Alexa Sail my
Boat’ were a great hit. Readers
quizzed the team on
electronics, paintwork, VHF
radios and more, plus the RNLI
gave a liferaft demonstration.
Despite storms the night
before, the sun shone and
6,325 visitors turned out for the
Boatjumble to hunt down

maritime bargains and treasures.
There were 16 vessels for
sale in Boatmart, ranging from
a vintage motor cruiser and a
17ft gaff cutter to portable
sailing dinghies. A highlight of
the line-up was the beautifully
restored Fossil, one of only two
known 1950s Fairey Marine
launches.
Meanwhile in the Boatmall,
trunk traders sold off surplus
boating items, ranging from
fenders, tools, windows and
winches, to maps, telescopes
and steering wheels.

The Inland Waterways
Association (IWA) has
drawn up a list of 40
locations which it believes
could be at risk due to
insufficient use, including
the Standedge Tunnel on
the Huddersfield Narrow

Those who visit just 20
locations on the list will
qualify for a special plaque
as part of the IWA’s Silver
