WORLD RECORD APPLICATIONS

GARY CARTER’S SAILFISH ON 3KG
IGFA Trustee Gary Carter potentially set the new Men’s 3kg (6lb) line class world
record for Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) with this 46.9kg (103lb 6oz)
fish that he caught on February 26, 2018 while fishing out of Lobito, Angola aboard
Blue Sniffer with IGFA Representative Iain Nicholson. Carter, an experienced light-
tackle angler, needed only a few minutes to bring the fish to leader after it ate the
ballyhoo he fed it. The current IGFA world record is 39kg (85lb 15oz).

BARRACUDA ON 6KG
Junior angler Rex Clarke – age 12 –
recently caught this 29.85kg (65lb 12oz)
great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda)
while trolling a dead mackerel off the
coast of Kilifi, Kenya on February 12.
Using 6kg (12lb) tackle, Clarke skilfully
played the fish for 30 minutes before
it was landed. If approved, the catch
will earn Clarke the new Male Junior
world record and the Men’s 6kg (12lb)
line class world record, which currently
stand at 23.4kg (51lb 9oz) and 29.03kg
(63lb 15oz), respectively.

HOST A FISHING CLINIC
Working with IGFA Representative Frank
Thompson from the Cayman Island Angling
Club, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation
and Mercury Marine, the IGFA recently
hosted two free family fishing clinics in
Grand Cayman, a British Overseas Territory
in the Caribbean. They were arranged
to help educate the next generation of
anglers on ethical, conservation-minded
angling practices through the IGFA’s youth
education activity known as the Passport
to Fishing.
Participants move from station to station
where they receive basic angling education
such as tackle identification, knot tying,
casting and safety, catch-and-release best
practices, and environmental stewardship.
Once they have visited all of the stations
and received their ‘passport’ stamps, they
are given a rod and reel and are off to go
fishing under the supervision and guidance of IGFA staff and volunteers. In many
cases, this is the first introduction to fishing for the youngsters that attend.
The event in Grand Cayman is part of the IGFA’s ‘Fish for the Future’ mission to
teach 100,000 kids to fish by the end of 2019 – the IGFA’s 80th anniversary year.
