YOU STILL NEED SUNNIES

IN WINTER AS WELL
You may have been on the water celebrating
World Fishing Day on the 23rd June, but
bream will not be the only thing you could be
catching. The sun sits lower in the sky during
winter and that could be putting eyes at risk,
just as much as during summer.
Here are Maui Jim’s tips on the proper
shades for winter sailing and fishing.
Bright sunlight bleaches the
photoreceptors in your eyes and lengthens
the time it takes your eyes to adjust to the
dark. Normally, your eyes should adapt fully
to the dark within 30 minutes. Being in bright
sunlight for a day of fishing can delay this
adaptation by hours so, by protecting your
eyes, you shorten that period.
Sunglasses are not just for protection
against direct sunlight, exposure to bright
rays as they reflect off the surface of the
water can damage the eyes. Maui Jim’s
Polarised Plus2 lens technology is designed
to block out 100 per cent of harmful UV rays
and eliminate glare. Maui Jim lenses are also
infused with a patented combination of rare
earth elements to enhance the water colour.
It is important to have the correct lens
colour to match sailing conditions. If you
have woken to a day of unpredictable
weather, opt for more versatile lens colours
such as Maui Jim’s HCL Bronze, Maui HT or
Maui Rose. For days where the sun is on full
blast, a darker lens colour like Maui Jim’s
neutral grey is a better choice.
Maui Jim plead that sailors do not let
a day of sailing ruin eye health; leaving
the eyes exposed to harmful UV rays can
cause premature ageing as well as potential
eye health damage including sunburns
on the eye’s surface, cataracts, macular
degeneration and even cancer of the eye
and surrounding skin.
The wearing of non-protective sunglasses
is actually worse than going without. If
sunglasses offer shade but do not offer UVA
and UVB protection, they will cause eyes to
dilate, the pupils get larger and expose the
eyes to more of the harmful rays.
Maui Jim’s Peahi sunglasses are available in
four colours: matt black with Blue Hawaii, gloss
black with neutral grey, tortoise with HCL bronze
and matt black with HCL bronze. Available at
all leading optical retailers and online.

MOORING LINE COVERS FROM ROSEMACA
Rosemaca manufactures durable and
quality marine accessories, including its
mooring rope covers that will protect a
yacht from scratches and gel coat burn
caused by mooring line friction.
Established in 2018, Rosemaca rope
covers are manufactured with a custom
neoprene material, which is long lasting,
sleek and protects a vessel’s paint from
rope scratches while looking good.

With a fashion background,
Rosemaca’s director, Antonella Ianni,
created the neoprene material to be
strong and long-lasting, “having grown
up on and around boats my entire life,
I’ve seen first-hand the unsuspecting
damage that ropes can cause and how
expensive it is to fix. I wanted to create
an affordable product that would help
yacht and boat owners protect their
investment and still look luxurious.”
The youngest daughter of a fisherman,
Rosemaca is Antonella’s nod to her
family’s fishing legacy, which also
manufactures lightweight industrial
aprons used at Sydney’s Fish Markets.
Rosemaca’s neoprene, similar to
wetsuit material, has been altered to
withstand UV and salt-water exposure
and provide a cushion around the rope
that prevents scratches and scuff marks.
Fixed with an industrial Velcro clasp the
covers can be custom printed with a logo
or boat name.
Available in one metre lengths
and accommodating lines up to 24
millimetres, the full-length Velcro on
each rope cover allows for easy fitment
to existing spliced lines. Sold in packs
of 2, 6 or 12.
RRP: $45.00
