Fewershipyardsarebuildingyachtsover24metres,
but the number of projects continues to rise

shows,thepastfouryearshaveseen
asteadyincreaseinthenumberof
newbuildprojectsover24mandyetthesame
periodshowsagradualdeclineinthenumber
ofactiveyards–only185thisyear,downnearly
18percenton2014.
The trend is clearly down, suggesting the
industryisgoingthroughaperiodof
consolidation,withthoseshipyardsremaining
seeing an increase in the average number of
projectsontheirorderbooks:upfrom3.2to4.1.
However, Lamberto Tacoli, president of
NauticaItalianaandpresidentandCEOof
PeriniNavi,saysthatheexpectsmoreItalian
shipyardswillenterthesuperyachtsectorin
thecomingyears,drawingonthecountry’s
strongdomesticsupplychain.“Thenexttwo
yearswillseeageneralshiftfrommaritime
constructiontoyachtbuildingforanumber
of globally recognisable brands,” he adds.
Intermsoflaunches,only40to45percent
of active yards will complete a project in any
givenyearand18percenthavehadnolaunches
inthepastthreeyears.Thismeansthata
medium-termratherthanashort-termoutlook
isnecessarytogetaroundedperspectiveon
the state of the new build market.
“We are used to some years being leaner
intermsofdeliveries,butitalldependsonthe
pipeline,” says Jeroen Sirag, export director
at the Dutch national yachting association
HISWA.“TheDutchmarketshareoftheglobal
fleethasgrownfrom17.7to21.6percentover
thepastthreeyearsandweexpectthisto
continue for the foreseeable future.”
Across the North Sea, Richard Selby,
international development manager at British
MarineandSuperyachtUK,arguesthatthe
recent decline in the number of projects under
wayatBritishyardsisofsetbyarisingaverage
LOA. “Recent years have seen greater demand
foryachtsover45metres,withglobalgrowth
of4.8percentaveragedoutoverthelastthree
years.Thishasledtoagradualincreaseinthe
sizeandcomplexityofyachts.”
