S.S. Jaguar 100 at Brooklands, S.S. 1, factory XJ6, the only
Mk2 Estate and XK120 racing in New Zealand.
THERE ARE VERY FEW SIGNS THAT THE S.S. JAGUAR
raced at Brooklands pre-War, and it is true the first Lyons
sports car to wear the 'Jaguar' name was more often
assigned to rallies.
01 though is to the contrary, and shows 1937 2½ Litre
chassis #49027 at that famous site in Surrey - the first
dedicated motor racing track in the world. It was sold
new by Appleyards, but has been in Ohio for many years.
In 2014 it was undergoing a thorough restoration.
02 This S.S.1 'Four Light' was photographed in the US
many years ago, but we otherwise know nothing of it -
other than the many modifications. Notice the lack of
running boards from the front mudguards back, the faux
Cord-like flexible exhaust pipes in the bonnet and the
unusual grille mascot. We wonder what became of it?
03 It would not have been realised by many, but in this
instance the late-Andrew Whyte, former Jaguar Student
Apprentice, PR Manager and its greatest author, is seen
in France in 1973.
He checks as the new Series 2 press car is filled in a time
when you actually had an attendant do that for you. A
string of the first Series 2 XJs used by the factory carried
'RVC' plates. This is a six cylinder long wheelbase model.
We have no record of its chassis number though.
04 Jaguar didn't build a station wagon, or Estate, during
Sir William Lyons tenure - but it did give its blessing to
this Mk2 'County'.
The car was converted by Jones Brothers following
an idea by Mike Hawthorn, and was intended for
production by Mike in partnership with fellow dealer
and Jaguar racing hero, Duncan Hamilton.
The project was cancelled after Mike's tragic death, but
the prototype car was kept by the factory. It was used by
Jaguar as a fast assistance car for the works. It still exists
in Holland but has been modified.
05/06 Historic images never seen before. This is
XK120 chassis #660009, the Albert Shorter Auckland
demonstrator (page #96), racing in Christchurch in 1951
by first private owner Ron Roycroft on the 'Redwood'
track. The car is now in the UK having been restored.
