What Is a Detoxification Protocol?
Detoxification is a broad term used to describe a variety of different
methods that can help cleanse the body’s internal system and organs.
Detoxification protocols may include nutritional supplementation, herb-
al medicines, raw vegetarian diets, fasting, juicing, probiotics, hydrother-
apy, sauna, colonic irrigation, and exercise.
Detoxification addressed four different types of toxins: heavy metals, chemi-
cal toxins, microbial compounds, and byproducts from protein metabolism.
Why Detoxify?
Detoxification protocols cleanse the body of buildup accumulated as a
result of our dietary habits, toxic environment, and overburdened detoxi-
fication system. Proponents of detoxification report clearer skin, reduced
symptoms of many conditions, improved vitamin and mineral absorp-
tion, and better bowel function.
Autoimmune Detox
Detoxification is an important part of re-establishing healthy thyroid func-
tion. Our main detoxification organ, the liver may become “congested” from
the countless toxic substances we are exposed to on a daily basis.
Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, pesticides, and chemicals is a great way to kick
start the detoxification process. However, sometimes additional interven-
tion may be required.
Detox Methods
I researched a variety of detox methods as I wanted to develop a detox
program that fits the needs of those with Hashimoto’s.
Fasting is a great way to detox but may exacerbate adrenal fatigue.
Fiber and vegetables rich in sulfur also support liver detoxification, as do
raw fruits and vegetables. However, I knew that raw fruits and vegetables
are not an option for those with impaired digestion. Additionally, fiber
can be aggravating to many Hashimoto’s patients due to small-intestinal
bacterial overgrowth.
Generally, detox diets eliminate animal proteins and rely on nuts and
seeds for protein, but these may also be difficult to digest for some with
Hashimoto’s.
