BUNKER PLAY

Many amateurs struggle from the sand because they
are confused about technique. Confusion leads to a
lack of confidence, which leads to tentative swings,
which leads to bad shots. Break that cycle now by
adopting a more simplistic approach. Here’s how.

For consistent bunker
play, master your
address position
The biggest mistake people
make in bunkers is setting up
with your spine angled away
from the target, as you would
with a full shot. In bunkers,
you want your spine pretty
much vertical. Take a wide
stance and play the ball well
forward, opposite your left
heel. There’s no need to open
the clubface significantly
unless you need to loft the
ball up in the air quickly. It’s
helpful also to flare your lead
toe outwards at address. This
enables you to get your knee
out over your shoe, which
improves stability and stops
you from falling onto your
back foot in the downswing
and trying to lift the ball.
