Health cutbacks
Rebates for yoga, Pilates and other natural remedies have been cut from government
subsidies under new private health insurance plans. Australia offers discounts for young
people to encourage them to get private health cover. While the new rules elevate
the importance of mental health, support for yoga and other natural therapies has
been scaled back. Private insurers can still cover these items but they will no longer
be eligible for subsidies. Health minister Greg Hunt said the crackdown was the “right
move” and was based on advice from the Chief Medical Officer.

Postgrad posers
The India China Yoga College (ICYC) in Kunming, China’s first yoga college, has launched
a new three-year masters programme. Students will spend the first two years of the
course studying yoga in the Chinese city, capital of southwest Yunnan Province, with a
final year to be completed in India. Courses include asana, pranayama, yoga therapy
and physiology as well as Hindi and Sanskrit. ICYC was jointly set up two years ago by
Yunnan Minzu University and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in response to the
surge in interest in yoga in China and to boost bilateral relations.
