Yoga therapist Sarah Swindlehurst continues a nine-month exploration of the Chakras


NAME: Muladhara (‘Mulha’ means ‘bone
marrrow’)
LOCATION: In the male it is slightly inside
the perineum, and in the female it is on
the posterior side of the cervix.
COLOUR: Red
LOKA (Plane): Bhuloka – the gross/
physical plane
TATTVA (Element): Earth, representing
grounding and an earthly awareness.
MANDALA: Four petals, a circle within and
a square within the circle, and a triangle
pointing downwards indicating the flow of
energy to the Earth. The seed sound symbol
can be seen in the centre of the Mandala. The
four petals represent the frequency at which
the Chakra spins and are said to be seen
by clairvoyant vision. The circle represents
wholeness or totality and depicts the principle
of no beginning and no end (e.g. time). The
square in this Yantra represents the world
that expands in four directions. The four sides
symbolising the four gates or cosmic doors
in which the aspirant may go – within. This
represents the mundane world which must
be transcended by spiritual practice
(Earthly awareness).

world and in your connection to it. There
