The days can be colder and darker as we enter November, so we light fires to get warm and
bring much-needed heat back into our surroundings; the glow from the fire provides with it
comforting warmth. The same heat and warmth can be brought into our bodies by using black
pepper oil (piper nigrum). Made by distilling dried, crushed black peppercorns, the oil is native to
south-west India and is one of the oldest spices ever used.
It is a wonderfully warming oil bringing heat into the body, so is invaluable during the colder
months. Make a body oil by adding 4 drops of lavender oil and 1 drop of black pepper oil to a
carrier oil and massage into the body to warm and stimulate the whole body. This also works
well as a muscle ointment: rub into sore or aching muscles to ease aches and pains. If you suffer
from cold hands or feet, use the same oil and massage them well allowing the peppery spice to
warm them and provide immediate relief.
Black pepper oil not only works on bringing heat into the body but it also works on warming
and strengthening the mind and spirit. Place a drop in a diffuser, sit in Sukhasna and allow the
aroma to build up your inner strength, giving you endurance, determination and the renewed
vigour needed to see you through these colder, darker months.
Use in the lowest concentrations possible as it can cause skin
irritation and even affect kidneys.
