Meet the Artist

Elke Memmler (elke-memmler.de),
of Satteldorf, Germany, is a full-time
artist and workshop instructor. She’s
a signature
member of
the National
Watercolor
Society, and
holds mem-
bership in the
Water Color Club,
the German
Watercolor
Society and the
American Watercolor Society. Her
award-winning work has been
exhibited internationally. She’s
represented by Kunsthaus Michel,
in Würzburg, Germany; Inspire Art, in
Dresden, Germany; and Gallery Weigl,
in Nuremberg, Germany.

EXPRESSING JOY
When asked how she’d label or defi ne
her style, Memmler says, “If I had to
fi le my art under a category, I’d place
it in the drawer labeled ‘modern
expressive watercolor.’ I can’t quite
assign this label to my work today.
What’s modern today is old-fashioned
tomorrow—and that’s not my goal.
“Joy, happiness and contentment
are my goals,” she continues. “Th e
painting process—and its ultimate
outcome—should provide pleasure.
If I can also spark positive feelings of
joy for the viewer, then I’ve achieved
my goals.”

DOING THE WORK
Memmler says she hopes that her
work will always change and develop.
“One of the things that I believe con-
tributes to ongoing growth is to paint
daily,” she says. “I consider a day
without painting to be a lost day. Th e
motivation to push forward is a wise
saying from a colleague: ‘Th e best
picture is the next picture.’” WA
