GLOSSARY
MYSORE: A city in the south of India. It is also a particular
style of teaching Ashtanga Yoga. The Mysore style allows
students to practice the Ashtanga sequence at their own pace.
The instructor will then work individually with each student
in the room giving the students verbal instructions and
hands-on adjustments.
NAMASTE: A traditional greeting. Translates to βthe divine light in
me salutes the divine light in you.β
NIYAMAS: Describes methods of discipline.
PRANAYAMA: The act or practice of breathing.
PRATYAHARA: The act or practice of withdrawing from the senses.
SAMADHI: The highest state of yoga according to Patanjali.
The act or practice of meditative absorption or liberation.
SANTOSHA: The act or practice of contentment.
SATYA: The act or practice of truthfulness.
SAUCHA: The act or practice of cleanliness.
STHIRA: Strength. Strong and steady.
SUKHAM: Relaxation. Comfortable and at ease.
SVADHYAYA: The act or practice of self-study.
TAPAS: The act or practice of working through things to
create change.
UJJAYI: A yogic way of breathing. In ujjayi you breathe in a slow
and controlled manner through your nose.
VINYASA: The act of linking the breath to movement. Also
describes a set of poses that are used to move from a standing
pose back to Down Dog.
YAMAS: Describes ways to control ourselves.
