Butter Tarts
And while we’re on the subject of sweet treats, Canadians also love butter tarts. They
are pastry shells filled with a mixture of butter, eggs, sugar, and syrup that are baked
until they are semi-solid and have a crunchy top. Sometimes raisins and nuts are added.
Butter tarts originated with Canada’s pioneers and are most popular in its English-
speaking provinces. Butter tart festivals are held all across Ontario.
Ketchup Chips
Potato chips with exotic flavors are becoming
more common, but in Canada, ketchup-
flavored chips have been a favorite for a long
time. Canadians claim that they are like salt and
vinegar flavored chips with tomato added.
They say that they taste like the best parts
of ketchup, without being wet.
