Email has never been so manageable on the Mac
IF YOU USE the Mail app
with its default settings, you
may not notice much
glļhuhqfh/#exw#wkhuh#duh#d#ihz#qhz#
features. If you’ve stuck with the old
list view rather than adopting Mail’s
recent three–pane structure, this can
no longer be activated by ticking “Use
classic layout” in Mail > Preferences >
Viewing. On the View menu, check
“Use column layout” and uncheck
“Show Side Preview” to get the same

options in these two locations.
Lighten up
Dark Mode makes emails pretty
hard to read. In Mail > Preferences >
Viewing, uncheck “Use dark backgrounds
for messages” to flip the right–hand pane
back to black on white. You can’t do
this for the other panes, sadly.
Round the block
What does blocking actually do?
In Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail >
Blocked, you can choose if messages
from blocked senders are dumped in
the Bin or just marked. For any other
action, use Mail Rules instead.
Silent motion
Muting always turns off
notifications for a thread, but in Mail >
Preferences > General you can also opt to
move them to the Bin or Archive folder
(depending on the “Move discarded
messages into” option under Viewing).
HOW TO Customize Mail’s new features
Block, Mute, and
Unsubscribe
The new version of Mail adds quick ways
to prevent email annoyances. Muting a
thread turns off notifications, so a busy
conversation doesn’t ping constantly.
Blocking a sender marks or bins their
messages, and unsubscribe sends a
request to remove you from an email list.
FAMILIAR PLACES
Your mailboxes and
message list look much like
they did before, except
that in Dark Mode, as here,
they’re inverted to white
text on a dark grey
background.
QUICK MOVES
The new Move To item
lets you quickly transfer
the current message to
a different folder, popping
up a list identical to the far
left pane. To its left is the
Mute button.
BLOCKED OFF
The contextual menu
opened by clicking the
down arrow to the right of
a sender’s name now
includes a Block option —
simple but not as effective
as we’d have liked.
