Become a cropper
Add a statically framed shot to
the timeline. Click the Cropping icon
above the viewer, then click the Ken
Burns button under Style. A Start and
End frame appears, indicating the size
and position of the virtual camera move.

Layer two clips
Drag a clip into the timeline,
then drag a second clip onto the
cutaway layer above the first so they
run parallel. Click the Video Overlay
icon and then choose the Picture in
Picture option from the pop–up menu.

Add zoom and pan
Scrub the playhead to the end
of the clip. In our example, the dog
walks to the left of the frame. Drag the
End frame to reposition and resize it to
create a close–up to the subject. An
arrow indicates the direction of the pan.

Resize and
reposition
Drag inside the smaller picture to
reposition. Yellow guidelines show when
it’s aligned with the centre of the main
frame. Drag the blue corner handles to
resize the picture–in–picture clip.

Make your move
Click the Reset check to apply
the Ken Burns camera move, and tap
on the Spacebar to play the created
footage. In our example, the camera
pans left to follow the dog’s movement,
then zooms in to end on a close–up.

Add a border
By default the picture fades into
view, but you can use the pop–up menu
to make it zoom into shot. Click to add
a border to the picture, then click on the
color swatch and use the eyedropper
to sample a border color from the clip.

CLEVER KEY FRAMES

Add custom moves to your PiP inserts

After choosing the Picture in Picture option, drag the cutaway clip’s blue corner
handles to set a size for its starting point, and drag inside the clip to reposition it.
Place the playhead near the start of the clip in the timeline. Click the diamond–
shaped “Add a new keyframe at the playhead” icon at the top left of the viewer.
Scrub the playhead to where the inserted clip ends, then resize and reposition it
— a new keyframe will be added automatically. This causes the inserted clip to
move and enlarge as the video plays.
